Gene Olsen's '51 Merc |
The 1951 Mercury Convertible has long been considered an icon to hot rodders and kustomizers around the world. There is hardly a car that’s been built that can compare with its timeless design. In the world of radical customs the example you see before you is subtle by comparison to most. But, a closer inspection reveals numerous difficult and complex modifications including a 3” chopped and fully operable power folding top, lengthened deck lid, hand-made grille and bumpers, even the stock tail light location was dropped and angled forward 20 degrees. The highly modified Mercury chassis features a 502 big block Chevy engine, 4L80 GM Turbo transmission, Chevelle front clip, power disc brakes and the 9” Ford rear end is suspended on parallel leaf springs. It’s plenty low, but the stock ride has been retained for those long days out on the highway. This radical kustom is subtle, ya, about as subtle as a hammer!
